But if the LifeFlix folder is accidentally moved or reorganized, you may notice that your previously imported tapes suddenly disappear from the app. Don’t worry! 1. Why Your Imported Tapes May Appear Missing

LifeFlix stores all your digitized tapes and library data inside a dedicated LifeFlix folder located in your Mac’s Movies directory.

This folder contains your media files and the essential Library.plist—the file that tracks the location of every imported tape.

If this folder is moved, renamed, or placed on another drive, LifeFlix can no longer find your existing imports.

When that happens, the app automatically creates:

Because the new plist is empty, LifeFlix appears as if no tapes were ever imported.

2. How to Restore Your Previously Imported Tapes

If your existing tapes are missing, the fix is simple:

✔ Move the original LifeFlix folder back to its default location:

Macintosh HD → Users → [Your Username] → Movies → LifeFlix

LifeFlix will recognize your library again

Your imported tapes and metadata will be restored

Moving your original LifeFlix folder back will overwrite the new folder LifeFlix created automatically. Any media or changes added inside the newly created folder will be lost.

3. How to Prevent This Issue in the Future

If you need to free up space on your Mac—or prefer storing media externally—there’s a better approach than moving the LifeFlix folder itself.

Instead of copying files into the LifeFlix folder, this option tells LifeFlix to reference files stored elsewhere, such as:

Keeps the LifeFlix folder safely in its required location

This is the recommended setup for large archives or long-term storage.

4. Quick Tips for Smooth Library Management

Never move the LifeFlix folder out of your Movies directory.

Backup the entire LifeFlix folder before reorganizing drives.

Use Reference Files if your media library is large.

Label your external SSD if LifeFlix references files stored on it.

Keep external drives connected when browsing referenced media.

Start by choosing the image or video whose metadata you’d like to edit. Once selected, it will appear on your screen as shown below.

The metadata is organized into three main sections for easy viewing. Note that not all metadata fields are editable.

To check whether a section can be edited, simply click on it—if the “Edit Metadata” button at the bottom becomes active, you can make changes.

Click the “Edit Metadata” button to start editing.

You can add new information in the Keywords, People, and Places sections. However, you cannot remove tags automatically generated by the AI.

Your First Steps in Library: Installation, Setup & Importing

If you’re new to Library by LifeFlix and not quite ready to commit to a subscription, you can start with the free trial. It’s quick, easy, and gives you a great feel for how the software simplifies your digital media management.

Click “Sign Up for Free” in the top-right corner of the site.

Check the box to subscribe to our newsletter.

You’ll be redirected to the download page. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Library on your Mac. Once installation is complete, open the LifeFlix application and switch to Library view — you’ll see the viewing type displayed in the top-left corner.

To start importing, click the Import button. You’ll then have two options:

Connect your camcorder or video capture device using the correct cables:

FireWire – connect directly from camcorder to Mac.

USB – connect the camcorder to a video capture device using AV cables, then connect the device to your Mac.

2. Turn on your camcorder and set it to Playback mode.

3. Select your device in the list and click Start Import.

You can monitor the video in real time during import. To stop recording, click again — your video will automatically save to your Library.

Once imported, you can fine-tune your video’s color, exposure, sharpness, and more. Just select the video or photo, make your adjustments, and save your changes. (We’ll cover advanced editing features later — for now, we’ll focus on importing.)

When prompted, choose where you want your files saved. After that, your imported media will appear in the Library. You can also edit metadata later for better organization.

If your media files are already saved on your Mac, you can easily import them from Finder.

Follow the same process from step 4 of the Tape import section.

You can also import media directly from your iPhone.

Connect your iPhone to your Mac using a Lightning cable (or USB-C, depending on your model).

Unlock your iPhone and tap “Trust This Computer” if prompted.

In Library, choose Import from the iPhone.

Select the photos and videos you’d like to transfer.

Click Import to begin — your media will automatically appear in your Library once the process is complete.

This is a fast and convenient way to back up your mobile videos and organize them alongside your other media in one place.

LifeFlix v3.6 will store your captures in “Macintosh HD > Users > “your operating system profile name” > Movies > LifeFlix > Tapes” by default. You may change this location by selecting “File…” from the main interface. This will launch Finder and you may navigate and select any folder on your system to become the new archive destination for all your captures. 

Changing the name of your save destination such as editing a file name, or renaming a storage device will cause LifeFlix v3.6 to lose connection with your files. To correct for this, undo the name change back to its original name when the archive destination was first made.

LifeFlix v3.6 stores footage in "Macintosh HD > Users > [your OS profile name] > Movies > LifeFlix > Tapes".
