The Complete FireWire Guide for Mac Tape Digitising in 2026
FireWire was how digital camcorders connected to Macs for 26 years. Here is everything you need to know about it in 2026, including what still works and what does not.
What is FireWire?
FireWire (also written as IEEE 1394) is a high-speed digital connection that transfers video from a camcorder to a computer in real time without any quality loss. It was developed by Apple in the early 1990s and became the standard connection for MiniDV, HDV, Digital8, and HDV camcorders.
Sony branded it iLink. Canon called it DV Terminal. JVC and Panasonic called it DV or DV IN/OUT. They all refer to the same thing: a FireWire 400 connection using a 4-pin connector on the camcorder side.
FireWire versions
FireWire 400 (4-pin or 6-pin): Used on camcorders and early Macs. Transfers at 400 Mbps. FireWire 800 (9-pin): Faster version used on Mac ports from around 2003 to 2012. Transfers at 800 Mbps.
Most camcorders have a 4-pin FireWire port. Most Macs with native FireWire had a 9-pin FireWire 800 port. A 4-pin to 9-pin cable bridges the two.
Which Macs had native FireWire?
The last Macs with built-in FireWire ports were released in 2012. After that, Macs required a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter to connect any FireWire device.
What happened to FireWire support in macOS?
macOS Tahoe, released September 2025, removed FireWire support entirely. The drivers are gone at the system level. No adapter or workaround restores FireWire functionality on Tahoe. The FireWire section has been removed from System Information. Devices simply do not appear.
If you are on macOS Sequoia or earlier, FireWire still works. If you have updated to Tahoe, FireWire does not work regardless of your hardware.
What cables do you need?
Your camcorder has a 4-pin port. Your Mac has either a native FireWire 800 (9-pin) port, a Thunderbolt port via adapter, or no FireWire support at all.
For a Mac with a native FireWire 800 port (pre-2013 Mac): Use a 4-pin to 9-pin FireWire cable. This is a single cable and the most straightforward setup.
For an Intel Mac with Thunderbolt 1 or 2 (2013 to 2019): Use Apple's Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter (MD464LL/A), then a 4-pin to 9-pin FireWire cable.
For a modern Mac with Thunderbolt 3 or 4 (2019 onwards): Use a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, then Apple's Thunderbolt 2 to FireWire 800 adapter, then a 4-pin to 9-pin FireWire cable. Three pieces of hardware in a chain. This works on macOS Sequoia and on macOS Tahoe using DaVinci Resolve.
Important: avoid USB to FireWire adapters
Products labelled "USB to FireWire adapter" do not work. They cannot work. USB and FireWire are fundamentally different protocols and one cannot be converted to the other via a simple cable. These products are misleadingly labelled and should be avoided entirely.
