Sony MiniDV Handycam Series

Sony DCR-HC42 / DCR-HC42E Format: MiniDV Connection: FireWire 4-pin (Sony calls this iLink) Cable needed: 4-pin to 6-pin FireWire cable for Macs with FireWire 800 ports, or 4-pin to 9-pin for older FireWire 400 ports Works on: macOS up to Sequoia. Does not work on macOS Tahoe or later. Notes: Connect via the docking station FireWire port. Set camcorder to VTR or Play mode before connecting.

Sony DCR-TRV22 / TRV33 / TRV38 Format: MiniDV Connection: FireWire 4-pin (iLink) Cable needed: 4-pin to 6-pin or 4-pin to 9-pin FireWire cable Works on: macOS up to Sequoia. Notes: One of the most common Sony MiniDV models. Reliable capture performance on all supported macOS versions.

Sony DCR-TRV900 / TRV950 Format: MiniDV (prosumer) Connection: FireWire 4-pin (iLink) Cable needed: 4-pin to 6-pin FireWire cable Works on: macOS up to Sequoia. Notes: Higher-end Sony MiniDV models with excellent image quality. Highly recommended for best capture results.

Sony Digital8 Series (DCR-TRV350, TRV840) Format: Digital8, also plays Hi8 and Video8 tapes Connection: FireWire 4-pin (iLink) Cable needed: 4-pin to 6-pin or 4-pin to 9-pin FireWire cable Works on: macOS up to Sequoia. Notes: These are the most useful camcorders for Hi8 and Video8 users because they can digitise old analog tapes through a digital output. Not all Digital8 models can play analog Hi8 tapes. The DCR-TRV350 and TRV840 can. Avoid the DCR-TRV130, TRV140, TRV150, and TRV280 for Hi8 playback as these cannot play analog formats.

Canon MiniDV ZR Series

Canon ZR90 / ZR90 MC Format: MiniDV Connection: FireWire 4-pin (Canon calls this DV terminal). Note: the ZR90 does not support USB video transfer. FireWire is the only option. Cable needed: 4-pin to 6-pin FireWire cable Works on: macOS up to Sequoia. Notes: Canon officially confirms that USB video transfer is not possible on the ZR85 and ZR90. You must use FireWire.

Canon ZR100 / ZR200 / ZR300 / ZR500 / ZR700 / ZR850 / ZR900 / ZR950 Format: MiniDV Connection: FireWire 4-pin Cable needed: 4-pin to 6-pin FireWire cable Works on: macOS up to Sequoia. Notes: All Canon ZR series camcorders use a standard 4-pin FireWire port. Any cable in the ZR series is cross-compatible.

Panasonic MiniDV Series

Panasonic PV-GS180 / GS200 / GS300 / GS500 Format: MiniDV Connection: FireWire 4-pin (Panasonic calls this DV IN/OUT) Cable needed: 4-pin to 6-pin FireWire cable Works on: macOS up to Sequoia. Notes: Panasonic MiniDV camcorders are consistently reliable for Mac capture. The GS series are among the most common models found second hand.

JVC MiniDV Series

JVC GR-D200 / D230 / D270 / D370 / D390 Format: MiniDV Connection: FireWire 4-pin (JVC calls this DV) Cable needed: 4-pin to 6-pin FireWire cable Works on: macOS up to Sequoia.

JVC GR-DV800 / DV900 Format: MiniDV Connection: FireWire 4-pin Cable needed: 4-pin to 6-pin FireWire cable Works on: macOS up to Sequoia.

Hi8 and Video8 Camcorders

Hi8 and Video8 camcorders are analog and do not have a digital output. They cannot connect to a Mac directly via FireWire.

To digitise Hi8 tapes on a Mac, you have two options:

Option 1: Use a Sony Digital8 camcorder that can play Hi8 tapes. Models like the DCR-TRV350 and DCR-TRV840 play Hi8 and Video8 tapes and output the footage digitally through their iLink port, which connects to Mac via FireWire on macOS Sequoia or earlier.

Option 2: Use a USB analog capture card. Devices like the Elgato Video Capture or ClearClick Video to USB connect your Hi8 camcorder's RCA or S-Video output to your Mac via USB. This method works on all modern Macs including Apple Silicon and macOS Tahoe. Video quality is slightly lower than the FireWire method but it is the most accessible option in 2026.
