The LifeFlix Story

The LifeFlix Story

The LifeFlix story begins decades ago in Japan during the late 70's and early 80's. The founders, two brothers, grew up in Tokyo and from an early age spent countless hours roaming the streets and shops of Akihabara, the famed electronics district.

This was the Golden Age of consumer electronics and Japan's post-war economic miracle. As kids we were lucky to witness and tinker with gadgets months, if not years (or ever!) before our counterparts overseas. For example, the Sony CDP-101, the world’s first consumer CD player, was released in Japan in 1982, but didn't launch internationally until early 1983. Who knew, as we delighted ourselves with early prototypes of the Walkman and Betamax camcorders, that years later, we'd still be in the technology world.

Fast forward to 2013 and we found ourselves with dozens of old Video8, Hi8, Digital8, MiniDV, HDV and VHS tapes. Admittedly, having grown up in Japan, and spending 20 plus years in the video technology industry, we probably had more tapes on hand than the average person. We also had small children which seems to always add to the pile.

We first used Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro to capture our old tapes. Both these applications are great for professionals, but overkill for simply capturing old video tapes. We also tried iMovie but found that it no longer supported many camcorders. Thus, LifeFlix was born!
